Tortuga Backpacks V2: The Second Prototype

by

We’ve spent the summer hard at work on our first product update. Right now, we’re on the second prototype of the new version of our travel backpack. We’ve settled on most of the major design issues and are now working out the final kinks with our designers and factory.

Last weekend, we held the first ever Tortuga Design Summit in beautiful Pismo Beach, CA. (Yes, that’s a joke. We’re a 2-man show.) Below are a handful of pictures we took at the house we rented on Airbnb.

Check them out and let us know what you think in the comments.

Tortuga Travel Backpack
Suitcases aren't designed for world travel. Neither are the enormous, poorly-designed backpacks a lot of travelers end up using.

You don’t have to compromise any more. Now there’s a solution made for travelers, by travelers.

Freddie, how can you see tortuga’s future in the distance without your sunglasses? (because its so bright, get it?)

    • http://www.tortugabackpacks.com/ Fred Perrotta

I was born with Stunna Shades implanted in my retinas, duh.

  • pzo

    Ha how could I forget

  • Cally

Looks like something I’d happily use. Are there tie down straps inside?

  • Anaru R

No more footwear compartment ? :(

    • http://www.tortugabackpacks.com/ Fred Perrotta

Not a dedicated one but still the same amount of space overall.

  • Ryan of PauseTheMoment.com

Wow, this looks like an incredible pack! Any idea when you plan on releasing it to the public?

    • http://www.tortugabackpacks.com/ Fred Perrotta

Thanks, Ryan. We’re aiming for Q1 2013 but manufacturing times are tough to estimate. Stay tuned here or on FB/Twitter for updates.

  • Mike

The new pack looks great — it seems like an ideal size for a variety of travel, and the overall look is really cool (while not calling too much attention to itself). Looks durably made, too.

Looking forward to learning more about it… Do you have an idea of what the interior storage capacity is?

Again, looks really good. Nice job, guys!

    • http://www.tortugabackpacks.com/ Fred Perrotta

Thanks, Mike. We’re aiming for unique but not obnoxious.

The capacity will be a bit shy of 45L. We started with the max carry on dimensions (22x14x9″, roughly 45L) but tapered it a bit in some directions. Once we finalize a production sample, I’ll be able to share the final number.

Hope that works for your travel style.

      • Mike

Thanks for the info, Fred… the pack should hold quite a bit!!! Looking forward to seeing the final product.

Love the new design. 2 questions — will there be a way to still lock the zippers, and have you considered thicker zippers altogether on the design? Security nut here, and like having everything out-of-site locked and safe. Thanks!

    • http://www.tortugabackpacks.com/ Fred Perrotta

No worries, we’re big on security too. The zippers to the main compartment, front pocket, and laptop sleeve will all be lockable. They’re #8 zippers which are pretty damn sturdy.

Great to hear. I am looking to get a new one-bag for travel around Easter; any chance this may move from proto-type to production by then?

BTW, will it be the same fabric strength?

        • http://www.tortugabackpacks.com/ Fred Perrotta

The body material will be the same ballistic nylon. We’re pushing for a Q1 launch, but all dates are tentative.

Excellent! Will look forward to it!!
